Market Folly: Seth Klarman's Baupost Group Bets Big On Capitalsource (CSE) & News Corp (NWS-A): 13F Filing Q1 2009

annonymous · 6 months agothis may be a silly question, but how do you know that they manage $14 billion if the 13-F had $1.1 billion as the assets filed?

marketfolly · 6 months agoNah not a silly question at all. Basically, the 13F only shows long positions in US equities.. that's it. It does not reflect cash, short positions, positions held in foreign markets, etc. And, in the past, Baupost has had abnormal levels of cash on their books as Klarman has been cautious to deploy it. So, once you add up all their other positions in different markets + their cash, you get to a much larger number. The 13F isn't usually a great indicator to measure a firm's overall AUM.

-
marketfolly · 4 months agoThe bond positions are also disclosed on the various SEC filings. You can search this information by going to their EDGAR database and searching either by public company name or by the hedge fund name and then navigating to the various filings. Hope this helps!
