Damian · 6 months agoI feel like I'm a broken record here, but why should I be impressed with a 20% return when the SP-500 has returned 30%? Now, if we assume he's hedged, then I'd want to look at his returns during the selloff to see how well he hedged he was. Otherwise, he's not providing much value beyond indexing. Again, why not just load up on a diverse portfolio of ETFs and then hedge with puts? I know, I know, I'm boring - but seriously, could we see his returns for 2008 to see how he did - because on a relative basis he is underperforming so I'd want to measure him on an absolute basis to really get an true picture of his stock picking ability.

Damian · 6 months agoActually - I'm totally wrong because he's returned 20% YTD - whereas the 30% return on SPY is basically flat - I'll shut up now. Need more coffee before posting.

marketfolly · 6 months agohaha no worries, happens to the best of us. We track Shumway because ever since inception they've been dominant with outperformance. And, converse to Galleon yesterday, they truly are stockpickers as you can see from their portfolio. 28.7% 3 year annualized return and they are a relatively newer fund, started trading around 2002.
